River Sea Chocolates

River-Sea Chocolates creates premium, bean-to-bar chocolate with a heavy focus on sustainability and the journey of cacao from the rainforest to the global market through carbon neutral transport.

In a saturated "craft chocolate" market, the brand needed a visual identity that did more than just look pretty on the shelf.

The challenge was to create a packaging system that:

  • Visually narrated the unique origin story of each bean.

  • Justified a premium price point through tactile and visual luxury.

  • Unified a diverse product line under one cohesive "River-Sea" aesthetic.

The visual language bridges the gap between the rugged, organic nature of the cacao farm and the refined elegance of the final tasting experience. We utilized a fluid zen tangle design system—allowing the illustrations to flow across the wrapper like water, a subtle nod to the company name.

The hero of the packaging is the custom artwork. I developed a distinctive illustrative style using intricate linework combined with organic color washes. This style mimics vintage botanical engravings but with a modern, vibrant color palette.

The Outcome

This design project moved River-Sea Chocolates from a "product" to a "story." By visualizing the ecosystem of the cacao, the packaging:

Educates the Consumer: The illustrations highlight the flavor profile and spark curiosity about the origin, inviting the customer to engage with the back-of-pack sustainability message.

Increases Perceived Value: The intricate art makes the bar feel like a giftable object, supporting a higher retail price.

Ensures Shelf Pop: The consistent layout, paired with unique illustrations for each flavor, creates a "collectible" feel that encourages customers to buy multiple bars to see the full set.
